Sandburg Women Open With 15-0 Run in Blowout of Stormers

The Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team raced to a huge lead in the first quarter on its way to blowing out Milwaukee Area Technical 81-44 on Wednesday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

KEY MOMENT
The Chargers held the Stormers scoreless for the game’s first 6:05, jumping to a 15-0 lead. Six different Chargers had field goals in the game-opening run, and Sandburg led 24-5 after a quarter.

SANDBURG STAR OF THE GAME
Freshman guard Hailey Lovetinsky (Overland Park, Kan./Spring Hill) scored a game-high 20 for the Chargers (3-2) on 8-of-11 shooting. Lovetinsky went 4 of 7 from 3-point range and had three of Sandburg’s 13 steals in the contest.

OTHER TOP CHARGERS

  • Freshman forward Yvonne Mixon (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) scored 11 points, grabbed a team-best eight rebounds and blocked a pair of shots.
  • Freshman guard Cora Neal (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville) scored 13 points, highlighted by a 3-for-5 night from beyond the arc.

FOR THE STORMERS
Gianna Anderson led the Stormers (0-4) with 17 points on 7-of-20 shooting. Keyara Joy added 10 points.

NOTABLES
Sandburg pushed its lead to 40 points on two occasions in the second half … The Chargers shot 51 percent for the game from the floor (30 for 59). … Sandburg had assists on 20 of its 30 field goals, with sophomore Katie Droste (Biggsville, Ill./West Central) handing out a team-high five.

UP NEXT
The Chargers will travel north of the state line to face Madison (Wis.) at 1 p.m. Saturday.
